Nightlife on the Costa Blanca has its own personality: it starts late (dining at 21:00-22:00 is normal), moves between open-air terraces and rooftops with sea views, and can end at 3:00 am on a Wednesday if you are in the right neighbourhood. It is not Ibiza — it does not try to be. It is more relaxed, more gastronomic and more accessible. This article maps it zone by zone.

Alicante city

El Barrio (Santa Cruz and Old Town)

The old quarter at the foot of Santa Bárbara castle. Narrow streets, tapas bars with barrels as tables, tiny terraces spilling onto the pavement. The area with the most personality. Bars close at 2:00-3:00; drinks start after tapas (from 23:00). Craft beer bars, wine bars, traditional tascas, cocktails in atmospheric venues, live flamenco in some bars.

The Port and the Explanada

The seafront promenade and marina are the terrace-restaurant and sea-view-drinks zone. More 'dressed up' than El Barrio: tablecloth restaurants, cocktails with boat views, artisan ice cream for the night stroll. Muelle de Levante has rice and seafood restaurants with waterside terraces (dinner: €25-50/person).

Marq / San Fernando / Rambla

The strip between the Rambla and San Fernando concentrates cocktail bars, nightclubs and live music venues. Alicante's 'party zone' proper — where the night extends to 5:00-6:00.

Playa de San Juan

In summer, San Juan has its own nightlife: beach chiringuitos with DJs, terrace cocktails facing the sea, a more relaxed vibe than the centre. Sunset sessions (music + cocktails at dusk) are a summer tradition at several beach venues.

Benidorm

The British zone (Levante)

The British 'strip': karaoke bars, cheap-beer pubs, drag shows, live comedy. Loud, fun and very international. Concentrated between Calle Gerona and Calle Londres.

The old town

The other Benidorm. Pedestrian streets with tapas bars, Italian restaurants, quiet terraces. Plaza del Castillo has sea views and is a sunset meeting point.

Nightclubs

Benidorm is famous for its big clubs: Penélope, KM, Ku and others open until 7:00 am. The club scene is most active July-September and on special events.

Northern Costa Blanca (Jávea, Dénia, Altea, Calpe)

The northern coast's night is more relaxed and gastronomic.

Jávea

El Arenal is the liveliest in summer: frontline terrace restaurants, cocktail bars, live music. The port has quieter bars with local atmosphere.

Dénia

Calle Marqués de Campo concentrates nightlife: terraces, ice cream parlours, cocktail bars. UNESCO gastronomy means dining IS the main event.

Altea

The old town at nightfall is magical: lamplit cobblestone streets, terrace restaurants with sea views, art galleries open at night. For a romantic dinner or quiet drink — not for a party night.

Calpe

The port and Arenal area have terrace bars and restaurants. Quieter than Benidorm, livelier than Altea.

Southern Costa Blanca (Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa)

Torrevieja

The seafront promenade and port area concentrate restaurants, ice cream parlours and cocktail bars. International and varied: British pubs, Russian restaurants, Scandinavian bars, Spanish terraces on the same street.

Orihuela Costa

La Zenia and Cabo Roig have bars and restaurants integrated into the urbanisations. Community nightlife: you know your neighbours at the pub, dine at the usual restaurant.

Restaurants with views: terraces worth booking

  • Monastrell (Alicante): Michelin star. Port-view terrace. Tasting menu from €80.
  • Cabo de las Huertas: cliff-top terraces east of Alicante. Rice and seafood with the sea below.
  • El Mirador del Castillo (Benidorm): old town, panoramic views of both bays. Sunset dinner = perfection.
  • BonAmb (Jávea): two Michelin stars. Montgo views. Haute cuisine in an intimate setting.
  • Calpe port: seafood restaurants with the illuminated Peñón de Ifach behind.
  • L'Escaleta (Cocentaina): two Michelin stars. Inland Alicante cuisine. 45 minutes from the coast, worth the trip.

Practical information

Timings

In Spain dinner is late. Restaurants start serving dinner at 20:00-20:30; peak is 21:00-22:00. Kitchens close at 23:00-23:30 (later on summer weekends). Cocktail bars open 22:00-23:00, close 2:00-4:00. Nightclubs open 0:00-1:00, close 6:00-7:00.

Prices

  • Draught beer (caña): €2-3
  • Glass of wine: €3-5

  • Dinner for two (mid-range): €40-70
  • Dinner for two (premium/views): €70-120

Night transport

Night public transport is limited. Alicante urban buses have weekend night service (Búho). Outside the city: taxi (night surcharge +20 %) or VTC apps (Uber, Cabify — available in Alicante and Benidorm, limited in small towns). In urbanisations or villages without public transport, designated driver or taxi are the only safe options.

Frequently asked questions

Is it safe to go out at night?

Yes. Alicante, Benidorm, Jávea, Torrevieja and most tourist areas are safe at night. Standard precautions apply: do not leave valuables visible, avoid dark isolated areas, watch for pickpockets in crowded zones. Overall, the Costa Blanca has a low crime rate and visible police presence in nightlife areas.

Is there nightlife outside summer?

Yes, but more moderate. In winter, nightlife concentrates in urban centres (Alicante centre, Benidorm old town) and is more gastronomic: dinners with friends, tapas, indoor drinks. Beach clubs and chiringuitos close or reduce hours October-May. But restaurants, wine bars and pubs operate year-round.

Can I dine at 19:00?

Technically yes — some restaurants open at 19:30-20:00. But you will dine alone or with other foreigners. Spanish dinner starts at 21:00 and the atmosphere arrives from 21:30. If you arrive at 19:00, the waiter will serve you warmly — but the restaurant will be empty.

Are there noise restrictions?

Yes. Municipalities have noise ordinances limiting terrace music (generally until 0:00-1:00 in residential areas). Nightclubs must be soundproofed. If you live above a bar, there may be noise — check before renting or buying in nightlife zones.

What is the coolest area right now?

In Alicante city, the Santa Cruz quarter remains the most characterful. The Central Market area (Alfonso el Sabio) is growing with new restaurants and cocktail bars. On the northern coast, Jávea's Arenal in summer is hard to beat. In the south, Torrevieja's seafront has increasingly quality dining.
