The most spectacular viewpoints in the province
From Santa Bárbara castle to the summit of Montgo, from the Peñón de Ifach to Guadalest. The views that justify living here — and how to reach each one.
The Costa Blanca has something the tourist brochure does not quite capture: the moments when you climb to a high point and the Mediterranean opens from horizon to horizon, with the sierra behind and a white village below, and you think 'this is where I live'. This article collects the province's most spectacular viewpoints — from those accessible by car to those demanding a solid hike. All deserve at least one visit.
Urban and accessible viewpoints
1. Santa Bárbara Castle (Alicante)
The quintessential Alicante viewpoint. At 166 m above sea level, the castle offers a 360° panorama over the city, port, bay and, on clear days, Tabarca island to the south. Access by free lift (from Postiguet beach), car (parking at the top) or on foot (20-30 min walk up the ramparts). Free access to the grounds; castle exhibitions €3. Best at sunset.
2. Castle Viewpoint (Benidorm)
At the old town's tip, Plaça del Castell (or Balcony of the Mediterranean). A platform over the sea separating Levante and Poniente beaches. Free access, on foot from the centre. Stairs — not accessible for reduced mobility. Best at sunrise or late afternoon.
3. Guadalest — The reservoir viewpoint
Cliff-top fortress village above a turquoise reservoir. The viewpoint is at the top by the San José castle ruins. Car from Benidorm (25 min) then walk (10 min). Free village access. Best early morning (before tour buses) or late afternoon.
4. Cruz del Castillo (Calpe)
Not the Peñón summit but the small viewpoint by the castle ruins in the old town. Views over Arenal bay, the Peñón, port and Sierra de Bernia. Free, 5-minute walk from the centre.
5. Serra Grossa (Alicante)
The 'urban' mountain at 161 m. 20-30 min trail from Albufereta. Panoramic view over San Juan, El Campello and the entire northern bay. Little known by tourists, loved by locals for sunset walks.
Mountain viewpoints (require hiking)
6. Peñón de Ifach summit (Calpe)
332 m above the sea. 1-1.5 hour trail with a final section using chains. Probably the Costa Blanca's most spectacular views: sea in three directions, Calpe below, Sierra de Bernia behind, Ibiza on the horizon on clear days. Mandatory free online booking.
7. Montgo summit (Dénia-Jávea)
753 m. 2-2.5 hour ascent. 360° view: Dénia, Jávea, Ibiza to the east, inland sierras to the west. The northern coast's highest viewpoint. Natural Park — may require booking in peak season.
8. Sierra de Bernia ridge (Callosa d'en Sarrià)
1 128 m. 2-3 hour ascent. Dual view: sea to the north, mountains to the south. The 'forat' (rock hole) passage adds adventure. Sunrise from the ridge — with valley mist and shimmering sea — is among the province's most photogenic.
9. Puig Campana summit (Finestrat)
1 406 m — the province's second-highest peak. Demanding ascent (3-3.5 hours). View from Benidorm to beyond Alicante, with inland sierras in every direction. For experienced hikers only.
10. Albir Lighthouse (Serra Gelada)
Only 90 m above the sea, but 300 m cliffs, turquoise water below and the lighthouse at the end create an unforgettable viewpoint. Paved trail, pushchair-friendly. 45 minutes from the car park. The most accessible viewpoint on the list — and one of the most beautiful.
Roadside viewpoints
11. Granadella viewpoint (Jávea)
On the road down to Cala Granadella, curves where the view opens over the cove and cliffs. No formal car park — people stop on the verge. Turquoise water framed by pine-covered cliffs.
12. Amadorio Reservoir viewpoint (Villajoyosa-Orxeta)
On the CV-770. View over the Amadorio reservoir with Sierra Aitana behind. Little known, very quiet.
13. Puerto de Confrides (Guadalest-Alcoy road)
On the CV-70. At 1 000+ m. View over the Marina Alta and Baja valleys with the sea beyond. In winter, snowy Aitana and Serrella peaks frame the landscape. The province's most 'alpine' view.
Sunset: the invisible viewpoint
The best Costa Blanca viewpoint has no name or GPS coordinates. It is any terrace, any beach, any bench facing west at 19:00-20:00 on a September day. The Costa Blanca's sunset light — golden, warm, slow — turns any elevated or open point into a show. You do not need to climb 1 400 m. Sometimes your balcony is the best viewpoint in the world.
